History

HISTORY

The Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi (FUTIA) was established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in June 2021. This university was one of two new Universities of Technology established and located in Akwa Ibom State in the South-South and in Jigawa in the North-West geopolitical zones of Nigeria. Prior to the establishment of these two universities, the government had established four universities of Technology in Yola (North East), Akure (South West), Owerri (South East) and Minna (North Central). The six universities of Technology are satellite institutions of a proposed apex National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Abuja, the nation’s capital. By establishing FUTIA and other new universities, Nigeria seeks to increase access to university education, achieve balance and equity in the location of facilities and increase knowledge in science and technology. The Federal University of Technology Ikot Abasi is one of 11 specialized science universities made up of 6 universities of Technology, 3 universities of Agriculture in Makurdi, Abeokuta and Umudike and 2 universities of Health Sciences at Azare (Bauchi State) and Ila-Orangun (Osun State).

 

The six universities of Technology are satellite institutions of a proposed apex National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Abuja, the nation’s capital. The NIT is envisaged as a postgraduate center devoted to research and innovation, drawing the best graduates from the six universities of Technology and other outstanding graduates from within and outside Nigeria. The university in Akwa Ibom State is sited in Ikot Abasi.

On 2 February 16, 2022, the Principal Officers of the Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi were appointed by the Federal Government as follows: Professor Leo Daniel- Vice-Chancellor, Mrs Offiongita Essessien Nkang – Registrar, Dr. Mbobo Erasmus Mbobo – Bursar and Professor Phillip U. Akor – Librarian.
