The School of Management Technology (SMAT) of the Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi has emerged winner of the Second Edition of the Vice Chancellor’s Football Championship after defeating the School of Engineering and Engineering Technology (SEET) of the Institution with Four
: Three
Goals in penalty shoot-outs.
The Final Match held on Friday, 23rd May, 2025 ended at Goalless Draw in a regulation time, while the SCHOOL OF PURE AND APPLIED SCIENCES (SPAS) of the University took the THIRD POSITION after defeating the School of Computing & Information Technology at THIRD PLACE MATCH played on Thursday, 22nd May, 2025.
In his speech at the Closing Ceremony, the Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Technology Ikot Abasi (FUTIA) and Sponsor of the Football Cup Championship 2025, Prof. Leo Daniel congratulated the overall winner and the runner-ups of the Championship. The FUTIA VC observed that the University Community has been inspired and electrified through the Football Competition as evidenced on the faces of the Management, Staff and Students of the University.
The Vice Chancellor particularly appreciated his Management Team, the University’s Sports Committee led by Dr Columbus Udofot and the University Sports Coach, Uboho Uku, the Match Officials, the Cabin Crew, the guest Team – All Stars FC, Ikot Abasi, the Stakeholders of the host Communities who were in attendance, the Staff, Students, the University Community among others that contributed in various ways towards the success of the fiesta.
Prof. Daniel who is a Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics used the occasion on behalf of the Management to appreciate the Executive Chairman of Ikot Abasi – Hon. Ime Williamson represented by the Supervisor for Youth & Sports – Mr Steven Monday, the President General of Mboho Ikot Abasi, Hon. Chelly Okoko represented by Hon. Ufok Frank, other stakeholders, the Traditional Rulers, Groups, host communities and the students for conducting themselves appropriately throughout the fiesta.




The University Don assured that the Vice Chancellor’s Cup will be hosted annually as part of the University’s continuous commitment to boosting academic excellence through extracurricular activities.
Trophies, Prizes and Medals were later presented to the Overall Winner and the Runner-ups as well as some distinguished players and Teams that performed exceptionally at the football fiesta. Interestingly, the best Player of the Football Fiesta received a Full Tuition Scholarship for one Year Academic Session from one of the Corporate Partners in attendance – Progressive Education Services Ltd.




Goodwill messages were received at the event from the Executive Chairman, Ikot Abasi Local Government Area – Hon. Ime Williamson represented by the Supervisor for Youth & Sports – Mr. Stephen Monday, the representative of the President General of Mboho Ikot Abasi, Hon. Ufok Frank, the Village Head of Ikpetim – Etteidung (Elder) Asangausung Ukpe among others.
Some corporate partners including RUSAL ALSCON, Rampsky, Tyametob companies and Progressive Education Services Limited among others offered goodwill supports to the Football Fiesta.
In a vote of thanks, the Registrar of the University, Offiongita E. Nkang(Mrs) expressed appreciation to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Leo Daniel for demonstrating leadership and the initiative of sponsoring the 2nd Edition of the Football Championship which has ignited team spirit and sportsmanship in the University community aside from academics.
The Registrar expressed appreciation to the Stakeholders, Corporate Partners, the Security Agencies, host Communities, the Staff, the University’s Sports Committee/Coach, the Students, the Medical Team, the Information and Public Relations Directorate of the University and the entire University Community for their various contributions towards the success of the 2nd Edition of the Vice Chancellor’s Cup.
The event was equally attended by other Management Team of the University including the University Bursar, Dr Mbobo Erasmus Mbobo, University Librarian – Prof. Philip Akor, as well as Provosts of Schools, Dean of Students’ Affairs, Heads of Departments, other Staff, Students, Stakeholders, Security Agencies, the host communities other Sports enthusiasts within and outside the State.
