The Pro-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology Ikot Abasi, Rt. Hon.(Dr) Emaeyak Ukpong and the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Leo Daniel on Sunday, 11th August 2024 paid a strategic visit to the Chairman, Senate Committee on Solid Minerals and Senator representing Akwa Ibom South (Eket) Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Senator Ekong Sampson, Ph.D.
The visit is part of the University’s continuous efforts towards engaging critical stakeholders of the Institution with a view to attracting interventions and partnerships to the University.
At the occasion, the Vice Chancellor formally presented a LETTER OF APPRECIATION to the Senator for sponsoring a Bill that is seeking to offer a Legislative Framework for the Establishment of the Federal University of Technology Ikot Abasi (FUTIA).
The Senator who was appreciative of the visit used the occasion to disclose that he has facilitated and approved the construction of a 100 Million Naira State-of-the-Art Facility Hall at the Permanent Campus of the Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi. The proposed Hall he said as contained in the 2024 Budget Expenditure of the nation is aimed at upgrading the infrastructural base of the Institution and deepen learning experience among students and staff.
Responding, the Pro-Chancellor, Rt. Hon.(Dr) Emaeyak Ukpong expressed appreciation on behalf of the Governing Council, Management and the University Community to the National Assembly Member for his intervention while appealing to other critical stakeholders, Governments, other Intervention Agencies and International Oil Companies (IOCs) to emulate the kind gesture of the National Assembly Member. He pledged the commitment of the Governing Council and Management to work with the Senator and other stakeholders to attract development to the Institution.
Recall that the National Assembly had In March 2024 received a Bill seeking to provide legislative framework to support the establishment of the Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State, sponsored by Senator Ekong Sampson which has passed First Reading in the Senate.
Titled, ‘Bill for An Act to Provide for the Establishment of the Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State and For Related Matters’, the bill, among other things, will provide legal groundwork backing the University’s establishment.
Recall also that former President, Muhammadu Buhari had in June 2021, announced the establishment of the Federal University of Technology, Ikot Abasi, Akwa Ibom State alongside other Federal Universities of Technology in the country. The Institution had since then commenced academic and non academic activities.
The meeting took place at Watbridge Hotels and Resorts, Uyo and featured sundry discussions on other areas of mutual cooperation among others.
