FUTIA Inaugurates Lecture Series as Vice-Chancellor Expounds Academic Tripod

Professor Leo Daniel delivering inaugural lecture at FUTIA Lecture Series

The Federal University of Technology Ikot Abasi (FUTIA) launched its inaugural Lecture Series with a thought-provoking address by Vice-Chancellor Professor Leo Daniel. The event, held on Thursday, 14th November 2024, at the University Lecture Theatre, marked a significant milestone in the institution’s academic journey.

The Academic Tripod

Professor Daniel, Nigeria’s sole Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics, presented his academic hypothesis centred on the tripod of Publications, Proposals and Presentations. He posited that these three elements form the foundation of academic excellence in tertiary institutions.

“Writing research papers is one of the arts in academic environments, and the results of perfect research will contribute to sustainable national development, which is one of the hallmarks of university education”, Professor Daniel asserted.

Key Aspects of Academic Writing

The Vice-Chancellor outlined crucial steps for effective academic writing:

1. Literature Review: Emphasising the importance of comprehensive reviews in chosen research areas.

2. In-depth Research: Stressing the need to identify and address empirical, societal, and fundamental problems using appropriate research tools.

Recommendations for Academic Advancement

Professor Daniel made several recommendations to enhance academic output and national development:

1. Increased government funding for the education sector, beyond current Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) interventions.

2. Partnerships between International Oil Companies (IOCs), multinationals, and tertiary institutions for workforce development.

3. Adoption of writing for Publication, Proposal and Presentation as a lifestyle among academics.
